CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) NOTICE

Monday, March 16, 2020 - 9:00am

** LATEST INFORMATION ** UPDATED: 23 MAR 2020

On March 23, 2020, Governor Baker issued an emergency order requiring all businesses and organizations that do not provide “COVID-19 Essential Services” to close their physical workplaces and facilities to workers, customers and the public as of Tuesday, March 24th at noon until Tuesday, April 7th at noon. The Baker-Polito Administration also issued a list of designated businesses and organizations that provide essential services and workforces related to COVID-19 that shall continue to operate brick and mortar facilities during this two-week time period (https://www.mass.gov/doc/covid-19-essential-services/download). Crematories and cemeteries are included on this list. During this time, Newton Cemetery will continue to provide the essential services of cremations and burials.

Newton Cemetery is operating as follows:

MAIN OFFICE:  The administration office is closed to the public until further notice. Families and clients should contact us by phone at 617-332-0047 or email ncc@newcemcorp.org for assistance with the essential business activities of providing immediate burial and cremation services. The office is currently being staffed to answer calls and return messages Monday-Friday, 8:00am-1:00pm.

BURIALS AND CREMATIONS:  We will continue to schedule burials and cremations. Cremation witness services are suspended until further notice. The Baker-Polito Administration Order issued on March 23rd limits gatherings to 10 people during the state of emergency, a reduction from the 25 person limit established in an earlier order. This includes community, civic, public, leisure, faith-based events, and any similar event or activity that brings together more than 10 persons in any confined indoor or outdoor space. The order does not prohibit gatherings of more than 10 people in an outdoor space, like a park or athletic field, however Funeral Directors and families should strictly limit attendance at services as well as follow guidelines for minimizing exposure in social settings, including outdoors.

SALES: Our staff is available, by appointment only, to assist families with the purchase of burial space if a death has occurred or is imminent. Until further notice, we will not be scheduling pre-need sales appointments.

CHAPEL & COLUMBARIUM:  The chapel and columbarium are closed to the public, and will remain closed until further notice.

GROUNDS:  The grounds of Newton Cemetery & Arboretum remain open to the public from 8am to 7:30pm, and provide a place to find respite, solace, and peace at these uncertain times. Visitors may use our burial search to locate graves. We encourage visitors to use good judgement and adhere to the recommended guidelines for minimizing exposure in a social setting, even outdoors.
